Description of Services:The plant primarily burns bituminous waste coal reclaimed from former coal mine sites or active strip mines. Coal from each mine is stored in a separate pile, so the BTU value of each pile remains constant. 650 tons of coal are burned daily in the combustor to produce steam, which drives turbines that produce 32 megawatts of electricity.

The permit allows for 10% alternative fuel use. At present, the alternative fuels used include non-hazardous coal tar from former manufactured-gas plants and coke plant sites, including coal tar refineries, and creosote-contaminated wood, primarily railroad ties and utility poles. The facility intends to install a biomass feed system, which will allow it to burn biomass in quantities up to 20% of the daily fuel feed (by weight) as an alternative fuel.
