Description of Services:This facility is one of the 15 wood treating plants in the Railroad and Utility Products Group. New railroad crossties are manufactured here. The steam needed to operate the onsite facility for manufacturing the new crossties is provided by an onsite co-generation (cogen) facility that is the subject of this audit. The cogen facility burns spent wooden railroad crossties.

There is no pre-treatment of the spent ties and poles before combustion onsite in the wood-burning boiler. If the ties or poles are too large for the feed system, they are cut down to the appropriate size. Pieces of wood that are too small to go up the conveyors to the boiler cells are put on a separate conveyor going to a hog chipper. This unit shreds the smaller pieces of wood, which are then blown into the boiler chambers and combusted in that way. The steam produced in the cogen boiler is used to generate 8 mega-watts of electrical power and is then piped to the new crosstie manufacturing plant next door for use there. The produced power is sold to the local grid.
