Description of Services:The GKH facility receives low and high infectious hazardous wastes; however, only low infectious wastes are treated here. Examples include plastics, gauze, solid dressings, sponges, specimens, specimen containers and other waste used in research and patient care. High infectious wastes and various small packaged amounts of hazardous wastes from areas west of the greater London area are received and then transferred to the Grundon Clinical Waste Incinerator.

Low infectious clinical wastes are treated onsite by first passing through a shredder and a 50mm screen, then into one of two identical hydroclaves where they are treated with steam. The process produces a wet mush of paper and plastic called "flock" that is then landfilled onsite.

A landfill is operated on the back portion of the facility. The landfill receives only flock from the hydroclave process, ash from GCWI, and a few other non hazardous industrial wastes generated by Grundon. No outside wastes are accepted. The landfill is constructed with a clay liner only.
