Description of Services:The facility accepts infectious waste and Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS-foreign garbage) waste; cosmetics; and off-spec products for treatment in four rotating autoclaves, or rotoclaves. It also operates a two-chambered incinerator to destroy pathological wastes (body parts), non-hazardous off-spec pharmaceutical products, and confiscated drugs. No hazardous wastes are accepted. Infectious waste arrives in red bags within cardboard boxes supplied by Western Medical Waste. APHIS waste arrives in rigid containers, which must be emptied before processing. Other wastes arrive in original packaging, and in cardboard boxes, and may contain liquids, and solids. Western Medical Waste hauls approximately 60% of the biomedical wastes to the site in vans; 40% is brought in by 3rd party transporters, which may include trailers, and roll-offs. Some of the waste streams, such as off-spec pharmaceuticals, are shipped to the facility with a guarded escort which accompanies the waste during transport, and witnesses the destruction. The facility is also used by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and Customs Service for disposal of confiscated drugs. These drug wastes are always shipped to the facility on secure government transport. The facility services a wide variety of customers – hospitals, clinics, and pharmaceutical companies. Foreign garbage may be received from cruise ships entering the Port.
