| Description of Services: | The facility is permitted to receive nonhazardous petroleum contaminated soils (PCS), coal tar impacted soils, and low-PCB (<50 ppm) impacted soils. Bulk soils are unloaded directly into the contaminated soils building and stockpiled by job number. Contaminated soils are then transferred by a front-end loader from stockpiles to the screening plant. After screening, the contaminated soil is transported by conveyor belt to the processing building. Inside the processing building, the soil is dropped by feed hopper onto 14-foot x 14-foot cars. The cars, designed to hold up to 5 tons of soil, enter the 450-foot long tunnel kiln at a maximum rate of one car every 6 minutes (50 tons/hr). The tunnel kiln operates at temperatures in excess of 1200 degrees F, with retention times typically in the range of 2-3 hours. The tunnel kiln is constructed with internal stationary rakes, which till the soil in the cars (tilling produces very little dust compared to thermal desorption in a rotary kiln). The long retention times enable this kiln to achieve high destruction efficiencies, particularly for coal tar impacted soils. Belt speed is used to determine destruction efficiencies. |
