Description of Services:Holcim (Lanka) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of publicly traded Holcim Group, operates a cement manufacturing plant in the Puttalam District, Sri Lanka that is approved to co-process alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR), including hazardous (scheduled) and non-hazardous wastes.

The site consists of a dry process cement plant with two identical kilns. Limestone and other raw materials for the cement operations are transported by rail from a quarry 41 km from the plant site. The primary kiln fuel is coal imported from Indonesia however, AFR co-processing now currently provides up to 20% of the kiln fuel, primarily from nonhazardous wastes including biomass and textile scraps.

All AFR co-processing related operations at the facility are handled by Geocycle. Geocycle is the brand of the business units in the Holcim Group companies active in waste management by applying the technology of co-processing in cement kilns. The facility is now approved (since October 2008) to accept a wide range of hazardous wastes (also known as scheduled wastes in Sri Lanka) for co-processing as well as nonhazardous wastes. To date, the facility has primarily co-processed biomass wastes (rice husks and sawdust) and textile scraps, but has also processed petroleum sludge, waste oil, and expired pharmaceuticals.
