Review Program
(Visit Date):

There are 1 more reviews conducted prior to 2012 not shown.

Description of Services:The facility engages in asset management and disposition, data sanitizing, and value recovery. They accept most electronic and electrical equipment with a cord or circuit board, including desktop and laptop computers, servers, external storage devices, hubs, and routers, keyboards, mice, monitors, video, loose computer chips, printers, toner cartridges, copiers, scanners, telephones, and televisions. Wastes are received in trailers only, and may be shrink-wrapped on pallets (CRTs), placed into metal bins (Universal Waste Electronic Devices-UWEDs-which are any device with a printed circuit board), cardboard and gaylord bins, and in mail bins (smaller parts).

The facility conducts the following operations:

  • Sorting, and repackaging for shipment out (CRTs are processed; UWEDs are sorted)
  • CRTs are visually examined, and if they are obsolete, they are sent off-site for shredding. If not obsolete, there is a further check for cosmetic problems; equipment is powered up, and components checked. Some parts, including batteries, may be replaced with new parts. These activities take part inside the Tech Department, an air-conditioned area within the warehouse building where hard drives are erased, computer parts are trouble-shot, refurbished, and spare parts, such as batteries are stored.
  • There is a separately fenced, special projects area controlled by a vendor under a hard drive erasure/asset recovery agreement.

The following procedure summary explains security measures taken for electronic media:

  • Hard Drives for re-use Ė All hard drives are sanitized using DOD Software, single pass only.
  • Failed Hard Drives are physically destroyed in a 2-step process. Drives are first punctured with 3 holes from a drill press and are then sent to an off-site shredding facility for further destruction.
  • Hard Drive serial numbers can be captured and tracked at clientís request.
  • All removable media (including CDís, back-up tapes, cassettes, SIM cards, etc.) are collected and sent to HMR Sacramento and physically shredded on-site by a mobile shredding contractor.
