Description of Services:The facility conducts several operations, most of which are manual and labor intensive. Operations include:
  • LOW-BTU LIQUID WASTE (< 3000 BTUs/lb.) are segregated; compatible wastes are commingled into drums, which are manually labeled. Sent offsite for disposal.
  • HIGH-BTU LIQUID WASTE (>10,000 BTUs/lb.) are treated in the same manner and stored in dedicated tanks. High-BTU liquid waste is sent for incineration or fuel blending.
  • HALOGENATED SOLVENTS are commingled into drums, which are sampled and tested, then sent for fuel-blending.
  • NON-PROCESSABLE WASTES (too viscous to pump, containing high levels of suspended solids, or likely to precipitate) are poured into drums, blended, and sent for fuel-blending.
  • ALKALINE LIQUIDS are neutralized in drums and commingled with low-BTU wastes in dedicated tanks.
  • ACIDS WITH HEAVY METALS are commingled in drums and sampled. If they meet acceptability criteria for heavy-metal concentrations, they are transferred into 275 gallon totes, which are sent offsite for treatment. If these wastes contain high levels of mercury (>260 ppm) they are treated using electrolysis or precipitation and dewatering. The precipitates from this process are sent for mercury recovery.
  • MEDICAL WASTES are transferred to sharps containers if necessary; sharps containers are packaged into lined biomedical boxes with other medical waste and sent for incineration
  • CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES: Most of the controlled substances (pharmaceuticals) received are pills, capsules, or patches in their original containers. Labels and other materials accompanying the controlled substances (foil, plastic, paper, etc.) are shredded together with the substances into bleach or a solvent, depending on solubility. The resulting "composite" (consolidated material) is no longer tracked as a controlled substance, and is sent for incineration.
  • ASBESTOS wastes are segregated into friable and non-friable. Friable asbestos is wetted and stored in drums in a non-hazardous containment area, then stabilized using Portland cement (once per year). Non-friable asbestos is wetted, double-wrapped in plastic, and accumulated in a lined cubic-yard container, which is sealed when filled and sent to Michigan Disposal (EQ), Belleville, MI, a RCRA chemical landfill.
  • LAB-PACK WASTES are visually assessed and evaluated based on generator-supplied information; labeled and segregated by hazard class; stored; and re-packed. They are then sent for incineration.
  • COPPER, LEAD AND NICKEL are segregated and sent in drums to a metal recycler.
  • BERYLLIUM is lab-packed by itself and sent for reclamation.
  • DIOXIN CANDIDATES are properly lab-packed and sent for incineration.
  • RADIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS (uranium and thorium compounds) are accepted up to accumulable amounts. When accumulable amounts are reached, they are encapsulated in concrete in drums by offsite employees, then landfilled offsite.
  • MERCURY is removed from the device or container in which it arrives, placed in mercury flasks, and sent offsite for recovery.
  • UNIVERSAL WASTES, RECYCLABLES, DRUMS are sent offsite for recycling.
  • POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS arrive in transformers, PCB ballasts, capacitors, and some paints. The PCB-containing items are labeled and sent for either disassemble or incineration.
  • CYLINDERS are emptied and their contents are neutralized, solubilized, or chemically treated.
  • AEROSOLS are manually segregated and sent to various incineration sites.
  • NON-HAZARDOUS SOLIDS (including used PPE, non-RCRA lab debris, and non-hazardous chemical compounds) are bulked into cubic yard containers or drums and sent energy recovery.
  • ORGANIC LAB SOLIDS are blended with solvents to form a slurry, then sent for fuel blending.
  • INORGANIC LAB SOLIDS are bulked into cubic yard containers and sent for stabilization.
