Description of Services:Mercury-containing fluorescent lamps are crushed in a crushing machine designed, fabricated, and assembled by the former owner of the facility, Mercury Waste Solutions, Inc. (MWSI) over 10 years ago, and was recently rebuilt with minor design changes in 2008. The crusher has an associated screening trammel that separates the broken glass, aluminum, and phosphor powder, which contains the mercury. The broken lamp glass is shaken clean and conveyed to a covered roll off container. The aluminum end caps are collected in one cubic yard Gaylord boxes. The phosphor powder is collected in drums and transported offsite for recovery of elemental mercury. There is no retorting conducted at this site.

In addition to the fluorescent lamps, high intensity discharge (HID) lamps are also crushed onsite in a separate line. The crushed components are collected in drums, little powder is produced or collected because most of the mercury in these lamps has become vitrified on the inside of ampoules in the lamps.

The resulting powder from fluorescent lamps and crushed components of the HIDís are sent offsite for retorting. The glass is sent offsite for recycling in asphalt and the aluminum end caps are sent to metals recycling.
