Description of Services:The facility recovers elemental mercury from fluorescent lamps. Lamps are manually placed on a feed conveyor belt that leads to an enclosed crushing unit. Drums of pre-crushed bulbs are also accepted. The entire drum is placed in a feed hopper (the drum is later vacuumed out and re-used). The crushing unit breaks the lamps and separates resulting debris into four principal components: broken glass, aluminum, ferrous metal and mercury-containing calcium phosphate powder (usually referred to as "phosphor" powder). Calcium phosphate powder is collected in distiller barrels for thermal batch processing onsite: vaporization and subsequent condensation of the mercury contained in the phosphor powder. Recovered mercury is currently stored inside the distiller holding tank (for future recycling).
